Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 is the mobile SoC. It is the latest in the snapdragon 800 series providing the cutting-edge solutions in connectivity, photography, power, performance and battery performance. It is not a 6-core or 8-core processors like in the series of snapdragon 800 series. But they have traditional Quad-core configuration. It is designed with the latest 14 nm FinFet manufacturing technology.

Snapdragon 800 series processors are based on ARM design, but they have customized the core configuration for Snapdragon 820.

what’s new in snapdragon 820?

  • X12 LTE modem

Snapdragon 820 has X12 LTE  is 3 times faster than the X10 LTE. X12 LTE provides upto 33% faster peak download speed than X10 LTE.

  • Kryo CPU

The new Qualcomm  Kryo CPU has 2x performance and efficiency, when compared to the CPU of Snapdragon 810. This CPU is the Qualcomm’s first custom CPU. Thanks to the symphony system in-built in the processor which manages the power resources and task scheduling. Kryo CPU cores are clocked @ 2.2 GHz.

  • Adreno 530 GPU

               The Qualcomm  Adreno 530 GPU offers 40% improvement to graphics performance, compute capabilities, and power usage when compared to Adreno 430. It is a DirectX 12 graphics supporting for the modern graphics and visualization. They also claimed that the performance of GPU is faster than the latest Apple A9 chip’s PowerVR GPU .PowerVR GPU is still using DirectX 11.2 API , but Snapdragon 820 using DirectX 12 which also supports for new microsoft Windows 10 devices. This graphic chip can provide real console like graphics quality and support for virtual reality applications.

  • Hexagon 680 DSP

                     The new Qualcomm Hexagon 680 DSP also brings significant improvement to performance and battery life. The Hexagon 680 DSP also allows for ultra-low power “always-on” sensors and advanced low power-image processing.

  • 14-bit ISP

                This 14-bit Qualcomm Spectra Image Signal Processor (ISP) supports the capture of up to 25 megapixels with zero shutter lag.

                  This processor uses LTE-U which can access LTE connection in both licensed and unlicensed spectrum. This helps to boost the connection speed in congested areas. It have revolutionized with the solutions that will help to solve the performance and low connectivity problem. This processor will be seen in Android Flagship models in 2016.
