Intel Iris pro graphics overview

Intel Iris pro Graphics

Intel processor graphics provide the graphics, compute, media, and display for many of our processors including the 6th gen Intel Core processors. This is the latest 9th generation graphic processing from Intel. First, they were using PowerVR graphic processors in their old generation processors and in Intel ATOM processors. But they came out with their graphic processing unit solution from Intel HD 2000 to the latest one from Intel Iris pro graphics.

Intel Iris Graphics and Intel Iris Pro Graphics are the IGP(Integrated Graphic Processors) series introduced in 2013 with some models of Haswell processors as the high-performance versions of HD Graphics. Now the latest GPU in Iris pro series supports DirectX 12, Open GL 4.4, Shader model 5.0 and OpenCL 2.0.

Why they are High performance graphics??

Intel Iris pro series were first to integrate DRAM in them. Dynamic temporary memory embedded into processors. The significant amount of memory allowed in Iris pro series graphics is 64 MB or 128 MB. Intel refers to this memory as L4 cache memory which can be used for both CPU and GPU.

Features of Intel Iris pro graphics
  • Intel Quick Sync Video

Intel Quick Sync Video is Intel’s hardware video encoding and decoding technology. They were introduced in some of the intel’s processors back in 2011. First introduced in Sandy Bridge processors, Intel i-series 2nd generation processors.

  • Graphics Virtualization Technology

Graphics virtualization technology is supported by Iris pro graphic processors. Intel’s integrated GPU shared between multiple virtual machines on a time-sharing basis

  •   Multiple Monitor

HD 2500 and HD 4000 series supporting two monitor simultaneously using Display port configuration. Now From Haswell processors, they have started supporting three monitor setup on Integrated Graphics.

  •   4K video @ 60 FPS

Watching video content with Iris pro graphics at 4K resolution and multiple monitor configuration.

you can experience all these features in a single chip. There is no need for Discrete graphics.

They have Organized Intel Extreme Masters StarCraft professional Gaming match using only Iris Pro Graphics. You can get 1080p gaming experience, 4K video experience using Iris pro graphics.

It is First time in the history of the Apple Macbook pro series laptop, they have not used any Discrete graphics. Although it was a low end model, but they came out with Iris pro graphics. So , you see the Iris pro graphics capability is much better with Integrated graphics.

Haswell, Broadwell and Skylake series supports for the Intel Iris pro Graphics.
