How to reset your BIOS ???

BIOS stands for Basic Input Output System. The Old Bios consists of interface which is mostly in blue color. I was having Asrock and Gigabyte motherboards with old interface. you can only use keyboard in Old one. The latest version of BIOS is UEFI where, you can access to configuration setting in BIOS using Mouse and Keyboard both.

Nowadays motherboards supports dual BIOS. If one of its get fails, the other one is used as a backup. The example is Gigabyte 78LMT-USB3 motherboard supporting this technology.

BIOS stores the values such as configurations, date and time information in the CMOS battery , when the computer is turned off. This information which bios stores are important for stability of the computer system. If the current date and time do not match with the systems’s date and time, Computer will hang. It will give you error ” CMOS checksum error“. It will also affects the Operating system.

BIOS checksum error

I have experienced this error recently when installing windows 10 on my system.  so, when this error occurs, replace the battery as its voltage is getting dropped. If you continue with the low voltage battery, it will affects the values in the CMOS.

How to do it??

There are two ways

  1. Replacing CMOS battery

BIOS CMOS battery

  • Turn off the computer and unplug the power cord.
  • Remove the battery from the battery holder on the motherboard and wait for one minute.
  • Replace the battery.
  • Plugin the power cord and restart your computer.

Jumper are the two close or open pins.

2. Using Jumper

To clear the BIOS configuration and reset the CMOS values to factory defaults.

  • Turn off the computer and unplug the power cord.
  •  Use a metal object like a screwdriver to touch the two pins for a few seconds.
  • After system restart, go to BIOS setup to load default factory settings.

Replacing the battery have not solved my issue. As every time computer was restarting, still the same error ” POST error occurs“. Operating system was crashed. The time and values of the system was four years back from the current date and time. I changed the values in BIOS and forced to save them in BIOS. This helped me a lot to recover my BIOS. After formatting the system, I again install windows operating system.

If after replacing new battery, same error occurs. Then try adjusting system date and time from BIOS. If it saves successfully, you don’t need jumper to clear CMOS.

whenever you find the instability in your system, check the BIOS configuration setting. It is responsible for data flow between computer system and attached devices like Hard disk, video adapter, printer, keyboard and mouse.
