HEVC stands for High Efficiency Video Compression. This technology is integrated as hardware decoder on processors. It is supported by 6th generation AMD APUs.content provided are now adopting HEVC as their means to stream HD and Ultra HD content.Camera also expected to move to this new standard for image files.
HEVC,also known as H.265,was developed by International regulatory board to replace H.264 standard used for HD content today.
Why do we need H.265?
Standard Main goals to improve following features on HD and Ultra HD content.
It also enables reduce file size and bandwidth needed to stream the content on your display from online video services(such as Amazon). They have decided to use HEVC to stream 4K content on instant video services.
How does H.265 work efficiently compared to H.264?
It enables double compression ratio at the same number of bits, allowing to watch higher quality video with same bits/bandwidth.
most of the PC platforms were using HEVC as a result of software and Hardware decoding.but AMD will be first with dedicated HEVC decoder on its processors.HEVC is targeted at next-generation HDTV displays and content capture systems which feature progressive scanned frame rates and display resolutions from QVGA (320×240) to 4320p (8192×4320).
Why do the need for Hardware Decoder?
Although Software decoder available for decoding H.265 based video compression. Some of the software decoders are as follows:
- VLC player can decode H.265 videos but with windows 10.
- Windows 10 have provided support for H.265 using the own DXVA(DirectXVideo Acceleration).
- Android Lollipop supports H.265 videos.
But software decoding isn’t best option because it is not efficient.
Hence,need for HEVC Hardware decoder…
How to encode the H.265 videos?
H.265 encoding is more demanding than the other encoding due to its reduce file size and best picture quality.
Converters like Handbrake,Internet friendly media encoder, media coder and Divx Converters can be used for encoding HEVC videos.
Other h/w H.265 implementations:
Nvidia GTX 960 supports fixed full function HEVC Decoder in their discrete Graphic Cards.
Nvidia GTX 970 and GTX 980 includes HEVC Hardware Encoder
What I Think?
There is no reversing in this trend,as videos are becoming more popular and it will need more bandwidth. But video codecs can help to reduce the bandwidth. This video compression standard is generating more buzz to gain more in compression efficiency and will take over existing H.264 standard and most efficiently in online video streaming.
